Comments:

My wife Leslie (as it happens, a BHHS graduate) and I have lived in Ketchum, Idaho since 1987, when I became the Headmaster of The Community School in the neighboring town of Sun Valley. Our son, Alexander, is a novelist ("You Deserve Nothing"; "A Marker to Measure Drift") and a Contributing Editor to Condé Nast Traveler.

After leaving Beverly in 1972, the year Alexander was born, I attended graduate school at U.C.L.A. and, in 1976, began an eleven year stint at The Westlake School where I taught English and held a variety of positions, including Director of Development and Director of the Upper School. During those years we traveled to East Africa (with Tom Quinlan and his family), throughout Europe and the Bahamas, and the American west, including "Hemingway's Idaho," with which we fell in love. In 1986, I was asked to apply for the position of Headmaster of The Community School in Ketchum, Idaho.

I retired in 2006, after nineteen years as Headmaster and we now spend several months a year in Paris. Through a series of coincidences, we have been renting the apartment where Hemingway lived when he first came to the city--the apartment he writes about in "A Moveable Feast" and "The Sun Also Rises". So, we live in the mountains just steps from the river he fished, and within a mile or so of the house where he lived until his death, and in 'his' apartment in Paris. It sometimes seems to me that I am living in a story that began a long time ago.
